Evaluation Question 2

The characters within my film are similar to the ones seen in many popular horror films. As well as representing young innocent females, my characters simply represent the unknown. The fact that you are unaware of what it is that will not leave you alone is scary in itself. I feel the characters with my film can relate to everyone in this kind of situation. Many people may feel as though they are constantly being watched, this eye behind the title of my film makes the film more scary. This eyes caption is similar to the one in the grudge, they are both used to make the audience feel uneasy.
In my horror film i used a little child as the main character to illustrate that even the innocent ones can not be trusted. The female in my horror film looks similar to the girl from the ring, as they whore the same long white stress and both had long black hair.

Evaluation Question 1

Frame work of conventions

The first frame was taken from the beginning of my horror film opening. I chose this frame because it is one of the most distinctive scenes in the film. In this scene the main characater is destressed as she feels as though someone or something always seems to be following her. Meanwhile this takes place, at the bottom of the screen the production company appears. I believe this frame is distinctive because the production company relates to the action on scene. As the main character walks through the forest, the location is being introduced. Aswell as the setting, the font style is revealed.

The second frame reaveals who the main character is by using a close up. Within this frame the characters name appears at the top of the screen. The close up shot allows the audience to see the main characters face clear and in detail. They are able to understand that the character is somehow disturbed. The openining sets the scene and the sudience is given a rough idea of what the storyline is. I thought this was a distinctive frame because it is the first time this character gets introuduced.

The third frame consist of the other characters names which matches up with their faces. In this scene the character was not feeling herself, to portray her confusing myself and partner added a blury effect. The effect made the characters on screen look ghostly to make it seem that the main character is going mad. These characters are introduced here to show that they could be real aswell as fake. That these characters could be a figure of her imagination.

The fourth  frame is of the outside of a church. This church is where the rest of the scenes take place. This is one of the most important frames, because it is an establishing shot that shows the location of the actual horror film. Even though there is no writing on screen, i believe the church in itself tells a story. The shot was taken in the main characters point of u looking upwards to the church. This technique is often used in alot of horror movies becuase it adds suspence to where the character is heading to next.

The next frame is introduced with a match on action shot. I felt that this frame was also distinctive because this technique was very difficult to make perfect. At this point in the film the character is actually entering the place which she feels is going to help her, but really she is running into what she is trying to escape.

The sixth frame is distorted to make the film more scary. These special effects are often used in other horror films such as The Ring, The Other, The Grudge and many more.

This next frame was taken at a high angle. Myself and partner held the camera above the main characters head to suggest that in that particular situation she was in danger. We tried to signify that she was small compared to the thing that was haunting her. I felt that this was an important frame because of the high angle shot the audience is able to see the bible in her hand. Once they spot the bible, they automatically know that she is trying to pray to God for help and it helps the audience understand the storyline.

In this frame as well as being an over the shoulder shot it was taken at a mid angle so that you could see the ghostly figure in the background.

Lastly, this ninth frame is a very important one as it is the first time we see the title. The title is red to indicate danger and it adds to the theme of the actual horror film. The eye in the background goes well with the title because it makes the audience feel as though there is something constantly watching them. I believe this is an important frame because this is the part of the film where my partner and i really needed to shock our audience, to make them jump ut of their seats.

Horror film rough cut review

Recently during my lessons myself and partner have been editing our horror film and including various effects which could eventually make our film successful. We added a variety of opening credits and sound to go ontop. The research that i had done before hand on various film openings gave me an idea of what things to include. My partner and i included the directors, actors and actresses, film title and production company.

We then had to present our rough copy of our film to the class to get constructive criticism which could better our film later on. While the class watched our horror film 'Espiridion', the reactions were quite pleasing, because some of the class were quite shocked and scared. Although we got the ideal reaction from our audience, they then gave us feedback. We were told to improve on our sound effects and the timing of them. Within the film as the main character walked into the church, gospel music began to play. The music should have stopped smothly, or turned down in the background. However my partner and i cut it completly at a random point. Myself and partner took this into consideration and  made sure the foley sound was played continuously throughout, to make it seem more scary as if someone is constantly watching the character.

Another criticism we got was the lighting of the whole opening scene. We were told that it was difficult to see, which could effect the audiences response to the film. The lighting in the church was very dark, because it was taken and set in the night time. Myself and partner wanted to created a dull ghostly effect, but it came out different. So that the storyline was clear to the audience, we brightened the film and added various effects so that the darkness worked with the event happening. For example, we included a ghostly effect aswell as a distorted to show that the character isnt herself, which links to her surroundings which isnt normal either.

Various other people gave us very helful constructive feedback as they told us to add more opening credits. They told us to reduce the font of some so that it was suitable for the scene. As well as making changes to the different credits and the order of them we also changed the sound to go with it. Myself and partner included scary sounds as the writing came on screen. Depending on the credits we placed the right credits on the specific actors face. This made it clear to the audience who the actors were and what characters  they played.

My teacher made us aware that we would get less marks if the camera was jumpy and if the characters face was cut out. A variety of transitions did not work in certain places so we had to choose suitable ones. However, as well as the negative feedback the class gave us positive comments too. We were told our horror film opening was quite scary, that it had a clear story line, good sound effects and talented actors. My partner and i took all feedback onboard and made changes were it was needed.
